Lead Instructor
Liz Meyers is a CPA, and has an MBA from the University of Houston. Early in her career, she worked with Arthur Andersen, LLP and TME, Inc. She joined the nation’s largest food distributor and Fortune 100 Company, SYSCO Corporation, in 1989. Recently, the Association of Women in Computing recognized Liz’s achievements with the Leadership in Technology Award in 2007.
Liz is known for problem solving, motivation and leadership skills. She has had the opportunity to exercise these skills during her 12 years of management at SYSCO, including the positions of Chief Auditor and Sr. Director in Information Technology.
Her responsibilities in IT included managing the numerous deployments of proprietary and 3rd party best-of-breed software that impact over 47,000 employees in more than 170 locations. Liz was responsible for all facets of implementation, training, marketing/communications and documentation required to support these various IT initiatives. Within 18 months of taking position, Liz refocused an under-staffed team from one that lacked clear focus, motivation, and engagement to a team that understood their importance to the success of the company, excelled in the achievement of their deliverables and was seen as a valued partner by other departments and operating divisions of the company.
In her role as the Chief Auditor for SYSCO, Liz was interested in increasing the value the internal audit function provided to its audit customers. After attending one of Peter's Risk Based Integrated Auditing (RBIA) seminars in the spring of 1995 she realized she had finally found a solution that made sense for her audit team. Over the next year of working with Peter, Liz was able to implement the RBIA methodology within SYSCO.
Almost immediately, the operating company presidents’ and CFOs’ perceived value of the internal audits began to increase. By refocusing audits to identify key risks and determine with reasonable assurance whether those risks were mitigated or not, the internal audit department was being viewed as a knowledgeable and valued partner by their customers.
